Like fashion, wellness trends can be fleeting. One day we’re juicing all our meals into oblivion and the next we’re spending three hours prepping a chicken for a ridiculously complicated Whole30 dinner. Even fitness — remember when Shake Weights were a thing — has its fair share of “proven methods” that promise to give you abs and biceps as quickly as their infomercials fade from primetime TV.

While a good chunk of wellness trends only stand to complicate the simple process of creating a healthy life for you and your family, some are worthy of giving a shot. And what better way to navigate through the sea of fads then to ask the experts themselves?

We’ve rounded up four health and wellness bloggers and asked them what trends they’ve noticed — and which ones you should definitely give a shot.

    1. Sugar Detoxing

    Image

Whether you’re sneaking cookies from your kids and treating yourself to a mocha frappuccino at Starbucks a few times a week, we all have our own sugary vices. And while it may be tasty, it’s no surprise that overdoing it on sugar can wreak havoc on your body.

Carly Lockman, wellness blogger and health coach, said our concern about the dangers of processed sugar — paired with the increase in autoimmune diseases, infertility and cancer — is leading people to see out alternative solutions to achieving optimal health. A sugar detox, she said, is a great way to get started.

“I typically recommend people participate in some kind of whole foods based detox once a quarter,” she said. “We live in a time where we are inundated with toxins (in our food, in our environment, in our personal care products, etc.), and completing a sugar detox helps to relieve our livers of the enormous burden they carry regularly, simply as a result of existing in 2018.”

    2. Organic, Please!

    Image

A recent landmark lawsuit awarded Dewayne Johnson $250 million after they found Monsanto liable for their popular weed killer, Roundup, for causing him cancer.

The active ingredient in Roundup, glyphosate, is the majority of pesticides that are sprayed on most farms in the US.  However, the USDA certifies organic farms do not spray cancer-causing pesticides on their food.  There are 5000 more lawsuits pending against Monsanto.

You don't have to be one of them. Insist on organic ingredients in all your skin care, cleaning products, packaged foods and produce. Aks for organic every time you eat out.  Organic is less expensive when you shop on Live Green. Select the Organic standard to find brands that have organic products at wholesale prices.

    3. Meal Prepping

    Image

With mouths to feed and carpools to lead, it’s no wonder any parent has time for anything other than a Poptart in the morning. The increasing levels of business in the modern world are why many people turn to meal prepping, says nutritionist and best-selling author Toby Amidor.

“Folks are so busy they are looking for ways to save time while still cooking at home,” she said. “The answer has become meal prepping, which has taken off.”

Anyone looking to get started meal prepping can check out Amidor’s cookbooks, The Healthy Meal Prep Cookbook and Smart Meal Prep for Beginners, for resources and recipes to help people develop their skills.

    4. Plant-Based Milk Beverages

    Image

Gone are the days of coconut or walnut milk, Amidor claims. Instead, you’re going to see more plant-based milk options lining the shelves of your grocery store.

While it might seem like a healthier option (or a necessary change if you’re considering going vegan), the jury is still out on if they’ll give you the same benefits as good ole dairy.

“As the 2015-2020 dietary guidelines for Americans does not recognize any plant-based milk except soy as counting towards the three daily servings of dairy per day,” she said, “combining these plant-based beverages can help increase the nutrient profile of these beverages.”

And nutritionally speaking, soy milk is the most nutrient-rich alternative milk out there, although most soy is genetically modified and sprayed with RoundUp. If you buy soy milk, make sure it's organic!  Popular brands like Silk Pure Almond Milk and So Delicious Dairy Free Almond Milk are available at Live Green.

    5. Social Media Breaks

    Image

Nicole Drinkwater of Fitful Focus knows a thing or two about living a healthier life.

After making a commitment to herself in 2012, she lost 20 pounds and a became a certified personal trainer in Austin, Texas. In the years since she started her blog, she’s learned more and more about what it means to live life more holistically — which includes limiting her time on social media and “seeking refuge from the digital world.”

“More and more of my friends and family are ‘quitting’ social media,” she said. “The more time we spend sitting at our computers or thumbing through our phones, the worse our health becomes. Both our physical and mental health starts to suffer when we don’t get up, move around and socialize in real life with real people.”

“While social media definitely has an important role to play in our lives today, I do think we need to put a limit on it, both for our personal health and wellness and that of our world.”

One easy way to do that, Drinkwater said, is to take advantage of the new Facebook and Instagram features that allow you set usage limits within the app. You even get notified when you’ve hit them, letting you know it’s time to log off.

    6. Weight Training

    Image

Rather than spending hours on the treadmill, certified personal trainer and owner of the blog Pancakes and Pushups Sloane Davis said she’s noticed people focusing more on weight training than cardio.

“I feel every person should focus on weight training and lay off the cardio a bit,” she said. “Building muscle will enable you to actually change the shape of your body, whereas cardio will only allow you to become a smaller version of yourself.”

“So if you want perkier, rounder glutes, toned arms, or a six pack, weight training is what is going to get you there to achieve it.”

Another benefit from weight training is a 36-hour after burn, where you’re still burning calories long after your workout. The more intense the activity, the more you burn.

    7. At-Home Live-Streamed Workouts

    Image

Going to the gym can be super timing consuming — especially when you’re juggling the multiple, ever-changing schedules of the rest of your family. Hence why live-streamed workouts are gaining popularity.

“People love working out from the comfort of their own home,” Davis said. “They are able to join a class and connect with a trainer, pop in a DVD, or invest in a bench and dumbbells and download a great workout or find one on YouTube.”

“Traveling time is null, giving them more time to work out, and if you don’t want to get dressed, you can workout in your pajamas!”

And if you’re worried about not going as hard at home as you do in the gym, don’t be. Davis said that about 65% of people who purchase Nutrition and Fitness plans from me choose to work out at home, and they produce the same results as people who workout at the gym.
